About the Author

Lyn M. Fraser has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in financial statement analysis at Texas A&M University and has conducted numerous seminars on the subject for executive development and continuing education courses. A Certified Public Accountant, she is the co-author with Aileen Ormiston of Understanding the Corporate Annual Report: Nuts, Bolts, and a Few Loose Screws (Prentice Hall, 2003) and has published articles in the Journal of Accountancy, the Journal of Commercial Bank Lending, the Magazine of Bank Administration, and the Journal of Business Strategies. She has been recognized for Distinguished Achievement in Teaching by the Former Students Association at Texas A&M University and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Lyn’s most recent publication is a new mystery novel, “Debits and Credits”, published by Mainly Murder Press in 2014.

Aileen Ormiston teaches in the Accounting Department in the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and has taught in the MBA, honors, and online programs. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in finance from Texas A&M University. Prior to embarking on her teaching career, Aileen worked in cost accounting and also as an auditor in public accounting. She taught accounting and general business courses for 30 years at Mesa Community College, one of 13 universities and colleges that received a grant from the Accounting Education Change Commission. As a result of her pioneering work in changing accounting education, she was the recipient of the “Innovator of the Year” award from the League for Innovation in the Community College. For her service to honors students, Aileen has been named a Phi Theta Kappa mentor.

We used this book for class and sometimes it was very helpful and other times not so much. If you are not familiar with accounting practices some concepts were difficult to grasp. There were times when I had to Google certain terms to fully understand their meaning.

Just okay (not great)...needs more depth

The book helped me with my class and is very easy to understand with my background in Accounting Information Systems from NC State University but I only gave it 3 stars because it misses some important accounting concepts and there aren't answers to the practice problems. Otherwise a great book and mildly satisfied. It helped me in my last class so I can't complain too much. :/

Poor supplementary materials

The book reads extremely well. However, since one of the "goals" of the text is to assist persons wanting to learn the basic material on their own, then the answers to the supplementary cases, problems, etc., at the end of each chapter should be made available for either purchase or similar type problems should be made available (with the answers). When I contacted the publisher (Pearson) they sent me to the Pearsonstore to purchase student supplements. These supplements were in no way related to the book in question, and it appeared the publisher was unloading outdated stock onto unsuspecting purchasers.

People if your going to publish a book that has additional questions, cases and problems for people to do, and state that the book can serve as a "stand alone text" for those wanting to utilize it, then make the answers available. Yeah there are "multiple guess" questions available with answers, however the learning by doing part comes from answering the cases, problems and additional exercises listed at the end of each chapter after the "multiple guess" questions. If not, then why make the book available for purchase. At that point it becomes a ruse. Thank God I purchased it on the Amazon site and not on Pearson's at the outrageous price of $99.

Hence my reason for the one star.

About the Author
Adam Eason is a self-confessed hypnosis geek.

He has been a qualified hypnotherapist since 1997. Since then he has worked with several thousand individual therapy clients in his consulting rooms and as Principal his own training school, has taught many more individuals therapeutic hypnosis and self-hypnosis in his classrooms. His work has featured on primetime television as well as a wide array of other mainstream media.

Author of a number of books on the subject of hypnosis and creator of many hypnosis audio programmes that sell globally. He has lectured on the subjects of hypnosis and self-hypnosis around the world.

The Science of Self-Hypnosis is the culmination of his love for self-hypnosis that he has had since the early 1990s.

fact based approach

This book is great! I'm only half way through it, but it gives reasons and/or research results for all claims. Hypnosis does work, but the info you generally get is a combination of really useful info and useless parts that everyone just does because "that's the way it's done". Eason ditches all of the useless stuff and gives you facts.

And his example scripts are INCREDIBLE. I felt changed just by reading them.

About the Author

Mike Sullivan is a Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike has taught at Chicago State for over 30 years and has authored or co-authored over fifty books. Mike has four children, all of whom are involved with mathematics or publishing: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Mike III, who co-authors this series and  teaches college mathematics; Dan, who is a Pearson Education sales representative; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school mathematics. When he's not writing, Mike enjoys gardening or spending time with his family, including nine grandchildren.  

 

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College.  He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics.  Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

Horrid book

If you're going to be using this book on MyMathLab/MathXL then take my advice - don't waste any more money to buy the book. The entirety of the book is available as an ebook included with your subscription code.

This book is a heavy, huge waste of space. There is little to be learned from the book, as it is essentially a massive topic outline with an occasional example and copious self-assessment type questions. The questions which appear at the end of every section are page fillers - most of the work you do on an online class will render all those questions dead space. The online "View an Example" button is (in the absence of a good teacher/tutor) the only thing that teaches you how to do a problem, which shows you step by step (most of the time) how to solve that type of problem. Occasionally, you'll be quizzed on something that is not explained in the book - or explained in such a high level that no solution can be derived that will help you in practice. The answers to all the hundreds of pages of questions are not explained, only given. This leads me to believe that those working purely from the book without an online component are just as, if not worse off, than the online folks.

Students will have little choice in the selection of this book - it is my hope that teachers will see these reviews and choose a more helpful book. If all you care about as a teacher is hitting topic points, this book will make that painfully clear, but it will do your students no service as a learning tool. At the very least, make the book optional where online access applies.

Lastly, if you are considering the loose leaf book, stop considering. The book is useless enough as it is, but the ultimate price of saving the few bucks in binding is that loose leaf has literally no resale value. This will make you likely ineligible for book buyback and selling online is risky since nobody knows what pages may or may not be missing or what condition they're in after not having a binding. If you simply must have this book, look to a bound or electronic rental where applicable. This is one of those cases where nearly any price of rental below selling price will be a worthwhile transaction.

A great reference

I wish some of the examples were a little clearer in this book, but let's face it. You HAVE to buy this book for your math class. I think it's a good book because of it's breadth. Many topics are covered so I imagine it will be quite useful to look back over during my next few semesters in calculus.

My medical physiology course is extremely intense and there is no time to read all of the assigned reading in the textbook. Thanks to this pocket version of the text I am able to review chapters in half the time. I also recommend the textbook which provides detail description of figures that may not be covered in the pocket companion.

Pretty good text and a must for serious advanced physiology students who are headed toward medical or advanced nursing/PA degrees. It helps to simplify and consolidate the immense amount of minute and detailed info stocked up in the big text.

I wish many other books with complex topics had a pocket companion comparable to this one. If the topic is important to your success, then having the pocket companion is indispensable. I see the pocket companion as the architect's view (high level design) of physiology and the first step to learning. Depending on interest and time, you can selectively drill down into the textbook to explain topics of greater importance to you. If a particular topic is not that important you can just read the companion. I have already swept through many chapters and when I hit a chapter I wanted to understand in more detail, such as sports physiology, I went off and read the entire textbook chapter. When other chapters have more detail then I need I stick with the companion. Count yourself lucky to have this pocket companion as a first "cut" to the knowledge in the textbook, it will help immensely during the absorption and after for the quick and convenient recall.

I have been using this book, along with the 'Big Daddy' version for preparation for my surgical primary exams. In summary, it's gold. No, it won't tell you everything that the big book does, and certainly not as much detail as thicker texts like Ganong, but I think that is the real benefit of it. ALL IT HAS IS THE BASIC FACTS, and that is all you need to grasp the concepts and therefore answer most questions. If you are looking for a high distinction on your exams, then take a month off work and read Ganong. If you have less than a week and are trying just to pass, then 'Baby Guyton' is gold. Five stars.

Great Start!

This book is WONDERFUL!

As a medical student I do not have time to read the whole book, but the pocket guide gives me exactly what I need to draw a nice outline in my mind of what is being taught in class.

It is definitely a bit too big for most pockets that I can know, so it is not really possible to carry around with you in your white coat (unless you are REALLY motivated), but the information is great, well organized, well written, and a great start to studying!

I found this to be just disturbing enough to keep my interest. Some people reviewed this from the relatable standpoint of having been an unsatisfied customer somewhere in the past but I found myself focusing on how much this man clearly hated this girl from the time he laid eyes on her. He was full of rage and insults centered around her race from the jump. I think his brutal act had far more to do with his own inner struggles and animosity than how terrible her service was. I mean after all what do you really expect, it's a fast food joint, not a five star establishment. I felt a little uneasy after reading it yet I enjoyed the disgusting descriptiveness of the author's words. Worth the read for sure!

Short, captivating and unexpected

This is a story that will remain with you and be brought to memory the next time you are ordering fries and a meal and the service sucks. As the reader, I could connect with the protagonist, but was shocked by his unexpected action. I enjoyed hearing his thoughts and understanding his actions through his own narrative. The writer was so descriptive, I was able to visualize the scene so clearly. This could have been a novel, long and drawn out, yet the impact it had as a short story was even better. The writing is easy to read, captivating, descriptive, intriguing and quick. You have a unique style. This was for sure worth more than a dollar! I look forward to reading more.
