About the Author
Wendell Frye was born in 1940. He received his BA degree from Clark University, his MA from Middlebury College, and his PhD from Indiana University. His field of specialization is German, and he is a Professor of German at Hartwick College.

A gem of understatement

This is typical short novel (novella) from a 19th century writer often undervalued because of his focus on the less dramatic workings of human nature. It is thus a useful antidote to the unsubtle exhibitionism of much modern culture.
