Grade 2-4-- Van Allsburg's latest offering may be seen as preachy or provocative, allegorical or obvious, but like much of his previous work, it is bound to attract attention and stimulate discussion. Written in the form of a ship's log, the book outlines the unusual events that take place aboard the Rita Anne after the discovery of a glowing stone on a mysterious, deserted island. In a few brief entries, Captain Randall Ethan Hope notes his initial pleasure in the cultured and convivial crew, details the finding of the luminous stone, and divulges its terrible transformative effect--his shipmates have been turned into primates. When a sudden storm blows up, the Captain expects the worst. However, the ship survives long enough for the men to be rehabilitated and subsequently rescued. The stone is sent to the bottom of the sea by Captain Hope and all on board swear themselves to secrecy. The dramatic illustrations increase the suspense and surprise inherent in the unlikely adventures described. Visual humor, although used sparingly, also adds to the appeal of the colorful paintings. The two-time Caldecott winner continues the didactic vein of Just a Dream (1990). Captain Hope records the eerie events during a voyage of the Rita Anne. His crew is hard-working and ``accomplished in other ways''--they enjoy reading, music, and storytelling. Even so, after they stop on an island and bring back a mysterious rock with one smooth face that gives off a ``peculiar light,'' the men do nothing but watch it. Mesmerized, they sit transfixed until they are transformed into apes who don't even help when the ship is disabled in a storm. So, fortunately, is the stone, and Hope finds that the men are gradually returned to themselves as he reads to them. The artist's elegantly structured, richly shadowed paintings suggest more enigmatic depth than the story delivers, while the starkly boxed text interrupts the visual flow of each spread. The Wretched Stone is the second book I have read in the Van Allsburg line of books. The glowing stone that fascinated the sailors could have been compared to television "in the old days." Nowadays, it could be compared to smart phones or one of the many other pieces of technology that we have in abundance. That glowing stone could be taking us all over if we aren't careful. A wonderfully well written book that really makes you think. Also, maybe a bit intense for younger children.

Great ammunition against TV!

If you have trouble getting your kids to turn off the tv...here is a wonderful adventure book to show the kids how too much television viewing can turn you into an "ape"! Filled with metaphors for older children (8 and up) to figure out: Could the strange island where they found the wretched stone once have been inhabited with intelligent life? Perhaps all that is left (after pollution, technology) is unedible vegetation, undrinkable water, stinky odors--but the "stone" remains,("rough textured, gray with portion that is flat and smooth as glass,"), sound like a tv? How about the lightning that knocks out the "power" of the stone/tv? And I love the part where..."It seems that those who knew how to READ recovered more quickly."

Another recommended "anti-tv" book for kids: "Fred's TV" by, Clive Dobson.(may be out of print, but can still get in online!)

You Really Need Both Books

I first came into contact with this work because it was a required text for my seminary class on ethics. Pieper was a first rate German philosopher and expert on the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.
If you study this book, Faith, Hope, Love (the three theological virtues), along with his other book, The Four Cardinal Virtues (fortitude, temperance, justice, prudence), you will have a wonderful primer on ethics from a classical perspective. I especially enjoyed his section on love. It is one of the best treatments of the subject I have read.
One word of warning is in order. Philosophy is not light reading. I know, it was one of my majors. Philosophy written in German and translated into English produces a book that is not for the timid. If you are willing to take on the challenge, more power to you. It is worth the effort, but you should know what you are getting into before you put down your money. This is a book for those who want to think and wrestle with ethics. It is not for everyone.

These Three Things Abide

This book is a compilation of three essays by the popular Thomist, the late Josef Pieper, on the theological virtues. Though Pieper writes from a Christian perspective, he is doing philosophy not theology. (The theological virtues are so called not because they are for theologians only, but because they depend directly on God's grace.)

The richness of these essays derives from their thoroughgoing personalism. Pieper defines each virtue in terms of interpersonal relationships. In faith, "the will of the believer is directed toward the person of the witness, toward the warrantor." "Hope says: it will turn out well....It will turn out well for us." And "to love means to rejoice in the happiness of another."

As always, Pieper writes clearly, logically, at times movingly. This book reminds us that while the source of these virtues is beyond human reason, the practical understanding and practice of them is not.

Brilliant, challenging, and wonderful

This book really cannot be praised too highly. Pieper's discussion is more deep and insightful than any psychology text I've seen, and he's not even trying to do psychology.
He uses traditional and technical words (like "sloth"), but this is necessary to distinguish shades of moods, emotions, and actions. I used to think of "slothful" as synonymous with "laziness" -- but this book made me realize what a huge difference there was. You could work hard every day, but if deep inside you know you could do great things, and you simply don't bother to do them, then you are guilty of sloth. Many Christians (and non-Christians) that I know, including myself, will recognize this as a part of their lives.
And that's just from one paragraph of "Hope", the least powerful of these three essays!

Review of "Principles of Meteorological Analysis"

This book is a true classic publication. Its enduring value is not so much as a textbook, although I have seen it used as such. Rather, it is should be considered a primary reference work. There is no better discussion of the theory and practice of meteorological scalar analysis anywhere in the literature. Its treatment of kinematic analysis is perhaps its most unique aspect and it certainly is one of Saucier's specialties. It also has an excellent treatment of cross section analysis, as well as many other topics. About the only negative part of the book is that it was published first in 1955, so its content *is* becoming a bit dated. Nevertheless, this is one that should be in the collection of every serious meteorology student. It is challenging to read, but the value associated with its content makes the effort worthwhile.

This book, despite its age, continues to be the acme of scalar and kinematic analysis of meteorological fields. Not to mention many other methods of meteorological data analysis. Nothing yet exists in the literature which can serve to replace this classic. Every operational meterologist should own a copy of Saucier's book and the pages should be worn and dog-eared from frequent use!

I sat in a theater at the Humana Festival last year, after the closing monologue of ONE FLEA SPARE, unable to move. I had known Naomi Wallace's work well, having directed an earlier play, and I knew she had tremendous talent and promised to great things. Nothing had prepared me--not my admiration for her plays and for her beautiful, harsh, moving, brilliantly political poetry--for the experience of watching this play, which is in my opinion one of the finest works of dramatic literature written here or in England in the last two decades. About the Author
Naomi Wallace is from Kentucky. She was a 1999 recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, the grant popularly known as the genius award. A published poet in both England and The United States, she has also received grants from The Kentucky Foundation for Women and The Kentucky Arts Council and a 1997 NEA grant for poetry.

haunting & beautiful

Wallace's One Flea Spare is nearly unbearably beautiful in its precise language and poetic images, such as a woman who has not been touched by her husband in years speaking of a horse burning in a stable fire. The characters are all stuck in both a real and a metaphorical prison (people did get locked into their houses in plague ridden England)and can not escape each other. The class system is suddenly kicked aside when all the characters find they must depend on one another for their very survival. It speaks politically but the voice is never pedantic, as the honesty of the narrator, a witty and relentlessly observant young girl strips the pretenses and defences of the the adults around her in ways that are startingly funny.
The drama and suspense is fired up by the situation and by the building sexual tensions and confronations. Politics, voyeurism, poetry. It's all here. A brilliant work.

A Real Erotic Gem

This startling and fresh drama actually takes place in 1665, and concerns two upper class Londoners who get locked into a house with a sailor and a mysterious little girl. Because a servant died of plague in the house, the house has been boarded up for thirty days. Therefore, the four occupants must spend this time together in confines too close for comfort. What transpires in this at times hilarious black comedy is a disturbing clash of classes, and an exploration of gender roles and the body.
What is especially striking in the play is the erotic and strange love story between the sailor, Bunce, and the much older Darcy. Darcy's body has been badly burned from a childhood accident. In one scene of searing erotic intensity, Bunce touches her body in different places to see where she has feeling left. In another scene, Darcy puts her finger into a wound in Bunce's side. These are the sort of disturbing and erotic gender-bending scenes for which Wallace is known. This play will not disappoint!

More than I bargained for!

I am both a maker of flutes and a scholar of religion and culture in a formal setting. I purchased this book because I thought it would be a good resource for improving my flute crafting but it turned out to be much more than that in a good way. The author does an excellent job of addressing one of the prominent myths surrounding the flute: that it was used solely by men as a way of wooing females. C.S. Fuqua shows that not only has the flute historically been played by both women and men, but has always had a wide variety of uses as well. It seems that the "only men can play the flute" myth has more to do with sexist European theology being absorbed by modern Native American culture than anything genuinely Native American in origin. Highly recommended both for flute craftspeople and for scholars.

Great book on a misinterpreted instrument

Great book on a misinterpreted instrument. The author takes you on a journey back in time to find the origins of this beautiful instrument. Most of the information I thought I knew was wrong. The stories I had heard were simply made up in order for crafts people to sell their wares. After reading the history of the Native American flute instructions are provided on how to make your very own. The author also has a YouTube channel that is very helpful. One can not go wrong adding this book to their libary

About the Author
A former Department Chair, and Full Professor of the English Department at the University of Akron, Dr. Diana Reep is on the Editorial Review Board of the _Journal of Business Communication_, and specializes in business and technical communication and film studies. She is the author of several publications, including _The Educator's Writing Handbook_ and _Business and Technical Writing: An Annotated Bibliography of Books from 1880-1980_. Her books of literary criticism are _Margaret Deland and the Rescue and Romance_. She has also published a novel and numerous articles on television and gender roles, soap operas, the saloon in western films, Anne Rice's _Interview with the Vampire_, and issues of business and technical communication.

This is an excellent book.

I was required to take a technical writing course for my degree and this is the book we used. It did an excellent job of explaining how things should be professionally written. It covers everything from asking for a recommendation to typing a resume to typing a proper e-mail. The layout of the book makes everything very easy to learn. After every concept there are examples of what a proper document should look like and sometimes even an example of what it should not look like. At the time, I thought I would never use anything I was learning, but after only two months out of the class I find myself using it to type up my resume. If you are in a job that requires professionalism in language and writing skills then this book is a must have. You will be surprised at what you can learn.

Excellent book! (not your typical half-baked Thompson/Pearson offering)

I used this book as a student in a technical writing class. The book was EXCELLENT, and served all levels of writers well. It starts with general good writing practices -- outlining, avoiding jargon, writing clearly (especially using proper grammar), being accurate, using parallel construction, writing for mixed audiences, using appropriate style and tone, and using good document design (both logical and format-wise). It moves through intermediate topics -- how to use line drawings and other graphics, writing various types of descriptions (chronological, spatial, and so forth), when to use the various types of definitions, and formatting numbers, measurements, and lists. This continues through advanced concepts -- writing instructions, writing for the web, writing in a group, formal report writing, and giving presentations and oral reports.

Some of the stongest points in this book (besides the no-nonsense writing itself) are:

* "models" (examples of writing) at the end of each chapter,
* "Advice From the Workplace" (excellent articles about workplace writing),
* Appendix A (grammar, puntuation, and mechanics -- including numbers and abbreviations),
* and Appendix B (frequently confused words).

Excellent examples are also part of the text throughout the book.

Sadly, many college students today do *not* have English skills that should be *required* to graduate high school! It's partly due to the large number of non-native English speakers attending college, but mostly it's just poor schooling. This book *does* provide the tools to help college students (who would probably *not pass* a standardized test) to improve their English as well as their writing, if they were given a free pass out of high school. It is up to the *professor* to see that grammar skills are being improved. Sadly, that was not the case in my class -- not at all.

Diana Reep has done all she can to serve both non-native speakers and advanced writers alike. Please, professors, if you buy a book like this, don't waste it by ignoring your students' shorcomings with the English language!

Good Book for the Technical Writer

If you are a technical writer, or want to become one, this book is a very helpful reference and guide. Very useful sections on writing instructions, short reports, and long reports. This book is one of several similar books that should be used by the professional, or by someone learning technical writing.
