Great for analysing your systems

This book is not going to tell you how to come up with a system to be profitable. Its not even going to give you many insights into how to handicap sports but it gives you the tools to know whether or not your current handicapping/system has an edge and whether it will continue. The book focuses on a lot of stastitcal analysis of your betting record as well as the best options for staking.

Well worth the read for those who are not knew to the game. Sophisticated punters will get something out of this but those new to the game will probably be a bit bamboozled and not appreciate the information provided.

A decent introduction to the concept of value betting. The focus is very much on staking strategies and little attention is given to rating systems. There is no discussion of weighing subjective evidence such as motivation or fatigue. Good use of simulation highlights the need to set stake size correctly in order to balance the desire for bankroll growth with the need to avoid bankruptcy. There is some decent material on overrounds in different markets and the it is the only book I've read that talks about finding 'arithmetic value' - comparing the odds against the market average. This is a useful book for the bettor who wants to take the game more seriously . I would like to give it four stars but it is not well-rounded enough for a general beginners guide and lacking in the modelling insights that could be useful to more experienced players. The author also has a tendency to write a paragraph when a sentence would have sufficed.

These themes become manifest in the survivor's behavior, permeating his or her lifestyle and worldview.

Drawing on extensive interviews with police officers in five nominal categories--rookie officers, patrol sergeants, crime scene technicians, homicide detectives, and officers who survived a mortal combat situation in which an assailant or another officer died--Henry identifies the impact such death encounters have upon the individual, the police organization, and the occupational culture of policing. He has produced a comprehensive and highly textured interpretation of police psychology and police behavior, bolstered by the unique insights that come from his personal experience as an officer, his intimate familiarity with the subtleties and nuances of the police culture's value and belief systems, and his meticulous research and rigorous method. Death Work provides a unique prism through which to view the individual, organizational, and social dynamics of contemporary urban policing. Henry recently retied from a 21-year career in the NYPD, where he held the rank of Sergeant-Special Assignment and was Commanding Officer of the Special Projects Unit in the Police Commissioner's Office of Management Analysis and Planning. The first American police officer to be named a Fulbright Scholar, he earned his doctorate from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (John Jay) and is currently Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Pace University in New York.

Law Enforcement & the Psychology of Death. Hmmm . . .

Vincent Henry is a retired NYPD officer with over 20 years experience. His book - Death Work - is an analysis of the death experience and how it affects law enforcement personnel, specifically members of the NYPD. He takes a look at 5 categories of officers:

- rookies

- sargeants

- homicide detectives

- crime scene technicians

- police survivors (officers who killed suspects, were almost killed by suspects, or who witnessed the death of another officer)

and analyzes how the death experience impacts them psychologically, and how it affects their performance/perception as police officers. All in all, it's insightful and quite thorough. The majority of the book appears to have been written prior to 9/11, but there is a 30 page epilogue where he discusses what he did that day, and how that event impacted the NYPD as a whole. Clearly, police officers in an urban setting become familiar with death fairly quickly.

As a policeman and son of a policeman, Henry is able to give the reader an insider's view of the culture within the NYPD. Additionally, he makes it clear his research was done with the blessing of the NYPD's command hierarchy, and he was given wide latitude to interview and join other officers during the course of their specific duties. One thing I found interesting - Henry makes it clear his objectivity is less than it could be. He obviously cares a great deal about his topic, and an underlying theme throughout the book is his desire to pass this knowledge on to future policemen so they can become better cops. The many people he interviewed are not referred to as subjects, he calls them "collaborators", and his interviews took place not in an office at a college somewhere, but on the streets while these people were on duty.

This is definitely an interesting book. Henry's familiarity with both psychology and law enforcement give his conclusions extra weight they might lack coming from a purely academic researcher. If there are flaws in the book, they're in the length and the style. At over 400 pages, it's a serious read on a serious subject. As to style, the writing is a bit unwieldy. This book wasn't intended for the layman; Henry is a scholar writing for a more academic audience. That doesn't make this a bad book at all - if you work in a first response profession (police/fire/EMS) you'll be able to relate to the psychological responses he describes. But if you're expecting something catchy and breezy like Joseph Wambaugh, this ain't it. I'm just sayin'.

Who hasn't wished for a second chance at some point?

Anyone who reads this site and my reviews knows I'm a sucker for reunion romances. I can't help it, call it a character flaw but I am really big on do-overs, so when I saw the synopsis for Second Chances by Rita Oberlies, I knew I needed to read and review it. I'm so happy I did because this was a complicated, witty, and delicious story about two people who deserve a chance to get it right.

I'm going to start this review with my one complaint and to me it's a biggie, the author had the characters calling each other by both their first and last names throughout the book. I found it very difficult and a little confusing at first because I didn't realize what was happening. The heroine's name is Brenna Morgan (yep, basically two first names) and at one point I thought it had been changed and they missed changing it in a couple of spots during editing. This distracted from what is a very good story and I just didn't see the point.

The characters in this book were very well written with genuine flaws and believable personalities. I liked that they came across as very human and someone you might actually meet in real life. Brenna Morgan is one mixed up lady. Don't get me wrong, she's completely likeable, friendly, caring, and devoted. But she has a lot and I do mean A LOT of baggage. The thing is she knows this and even though it sometimes gets in her way, she doesn't make excuses. She's returned home to Boston so her great aunt can help her take care of her grandmother who is suffering from dementia. She has no job, her bank account is dwindling, and the ex-love of her life is bound and determined to win her back. Luke Braden is a high powered attorney in a family of high powered attorneys. It's never bothered him that he and Brenna come from different worlds even though he knows it bothers her. He has somewhat of a white knight complex but for her, he's really trying to tame it down. I love that early one; we know Luke is determined to get Brenna back. It shows that despite the little game he tries to play, he's invested in them even though she's determined to steer clear. What I really admire is that even when Brenna takes a job that is below her education level and not a "normal" job for a woman, he doesn't say a thing. Believe me, I'm not sure many men of his social standing and prominence would have been able to. To me this is very telling of Luke's true nature and one reason he's absolutely a stand up guy.

Even though these two have a history, the author lets their relationship build over time. Luke is really good at breaking down the walls Brenna has erected and not pushing her. When he chooses to spend time with her aunt and grandmother it melts my heart, even though I'm sure he does it to get closer to her. When a tragedy strikes he's there to pick up the pieces and help her deal with people and things she really doesn't want to deal with. When Brenna finally opens up, I love that he doesn't judge just offers support and his help. I appreciate that Brenna realizes she's taking more than she's giving in this relationship. I also admire that fact that even though she knows Luke would help her financially with anything she wants or needs, she doesn't expect it and refuses to let him. It humbles me when she shares things with Luke she's never told anyone because even though she's broken, it proves how strong she's been her whole life.

I found Second Chances to be an interesting, emotional, and enjoyable book filled with realistic characters, witty banter, and a fantastic opportunity to get it right the second time around. Enjoy!

A Cute Read

Second Chances by Rita Oberlies was such a cute read! The characters were absolutely wonderful, the plot was really cute, and the romance was pretty darn hot.

I loved the banter between all the characters, especially Luke and Brenna. All the time Brenna spent at her new job was too great - Harper was absolutely hilarious.

My one complaint about it would be that at first the story was a bit confusing with people calling each other by both their first and last names. It was a bit hard to keep straight. I also wish a little more of the characters past had been told - there was a lot I just kept waiting to hear about and never really did.

The characters were the best part of the book. They all had their different flaws and were super real. Brenna and Luke were so great together and I loved watching their story grow as the book went on. I loved Tess too - she was great.

Overall this was a pretty good read. It was fast paced and I breezed through it in just a few hours. A great read for anyone looking for a cute contemporary romance.

"Second Chances"by Rita Oberlies was a cute, witty, complicated and hot romance story. It kept me continuing to turn the page being a fast paced read until the end.

The story was of Luke Braden and Brenna Morgan who at one time had been sweethearts but something had happened and they were torn apart. The title of this novel is "Second Chances" and you will be finding out from the read if there will be any of this from these two people. You will find in some of this novel is a bit complicated in all the problems that this heroine went through but it was also witty and definitely delicious where you will soon see if these two people deserve a chance to get it right this second time.

The characters were very well written with believable and realistic personalities. Brenna seemed to be like a very mixed up person who was very friendly, caring and even likable but OMG what all she had gone through and was still going was truly really something. Luke... was this 'high powered attorney'..who was sort of thought as a 'white knight' complex for Brenna. Now, I am sure you are asking at this point just what is "Second Chances" all about... and this is where I say you must pick up this good read to find out. Will this guy get this
girl in the end?

If you are in for a interesting, enjoyable and emotional ride then you have come to the right place..and I do recommend "Second Chances" to you.
