Great read, useful tips !!

I was very embarrassed and ashamed to come to terms with the fact that I may be a compulsive liar. Since I was embarrassed to admit this to anyone, I was also very uncomfortable and nervous about seeking a counselor or psychologist to talk to. I found this book by accident when searching the topic on Amazon and I was intrigued. This book was the answer I was looking for. Caesar Lincoln provides tremendous insight, as well as practical advice and solutions for overcoming lying, as he addresses the causes, as well as the solution to stop. I found the book very easy to read and I am really starting to feel better about myself, and even more importantly, I am using the information I learned to take the steps necessary to be completely honest in my daily life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with this issue! 5 stars!

A Must Read classic

These timeless pieces of sage advice are capture in the seminal work of Dale Carnegie, Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business.
First published in 1926, Dale Carnegie spent a life in pursuit of man's potential. More than mere positive thinking, it is a book of ideas. Specifically, Carnegie states that "only an ignoramus is positive about everything". However putting positive energy behind what you say will make anyone shine.

This book centers on the importance of public speaking. You may say that you already are a good speaker or don't like to speak at all. This may be true but the art of influencing other is in sharing ideas through speaking.

True Foods, needs a little help before 2nd edition

Andrew Weil is a healthy life-style guru, and I have purchased several of his books. It's clear to me that several of the reviewers have been given complimentary copies of the book to review and they simply proceeded to write a book report without having made any of the recipes. Often times, as in this case, the recipes for a restaurant quantities are not accurately translated for home use. For a seasoned pro, this may not be a problem. However, if you plan on giving this gift to a beginning cook, they may have problems with it. I have made 12 recipes so far, and the wonderful part about most of them is the abundant use of fresh whole foods, and the frugal use of fats, salt and sugar.

If I had edited the book in advance, I would have advised that a "crustless quiche" is more commonly known as frittata on page 25. I would suggest you omit the baking soda in the Carrot-Parsnip-Zucchini Bread on page 26,and add 1 Tablespoon of baking powder instead. One medium carrot and one medium parsnip and one small zucchini does not mean anything. I used 4 cups total shredded vegetables. That works. Also,you must line your bread pans with paper if you are using olive oil instead of butter to keep the bread from sticking. Or use non-stick pans.

The Fattoush Salad on page 70 is a winner and will appeal to almost everyone. The Moroccan Chicken Salad on page 87 is the best low fat version of chicken salad you will ever find. You will never guess that it has so little mayonnaise! The Sweet Potato-Poblano Soup is wonderful but 3 quarts of water to 5 vegetables has got to be an error. If you double the amount of vegetables you will be fine, otherwise you will end up with a lot of extra broth and nothing like the photograph!

The Bison Chili on page 110 is excellent, with a flavor profile enhanced by a wide array of herbs, spices, and chocolate! The Miso-Marinated Black Cod on page 132 was not worth all the trouble when the fresh fish would have tasted better if it were naked! I would only mask the fish if it were not perfectly fresh.

The Chicken Enchiladas on page 145 were fabulous. The fresh tomatillo salsa is easy and incredibly delicious. You may want to double the recipe and make a blender full. The recipe neglected to tell you what to do with the corn after you browned it, but assumes you will figure it out. Contrary to the recipe you will need 3/4 cup of salsa, not 1/4 for the bottom of the pan, which should be 9 X 12 since they didn't specify. And you will have plenty of filling for 12 6" tortillas, not just 6 as the recipe reads.

The photography is beautiful but doesn't always relate to the recipe. Why show steel cut oats next to a recipe for granola that calls for old-fashioned rolled oats?

"True Foods", is evidence that Andrew Weil's recipes have evolved to the point where there is absolutely no sacrificing flavor for health. True Food will introduce you to new techniques, new food combinations, and new ingredients. That's a big accomplishment for any cookbook!

A mixed bag of pretty-darned-cool and "...but will I ever make this?"

When I was offered a copy of this cookbook, I jumped at the chance to review it. After all, I've been a Health Food Person since the 80s, when "eating healthy" meant carrot loaf and adding a tablespoon of brewer's yeast to everything. (Thankfully, we all got better at it.) True Food's goals of seasonable and sustainable align with my own, too.

Plus, the True Food restaurants are near me, here in Scottsdale. I've been to them several times, and would probably have said Yes to the cookbook just for the recipes for their drinks. (There's a nonalcoholic ginger-fizz drink sweetened with agave that I really like.) The problem is: I stopped going to the restaurant because they use olive oil a bit too much; since my husband is extremely allergic to it (not YOUR problem), we get tired of playing 20 Questions with the wait staff. But that made me more enthusiastic about the cookbook, since obviously at home I can use any oil I want.

I've spent several weeks with this cookbook and... I have mixed feelings. I really like the goals it sets, but too few of the recipes make me say, "Yum, let's make that for dinner tonight!" Either they are fussy, or they use ingredients that are hard to find even for this Scottsdale foodie. (Why yes, I *DO* do all my shopping at Whole Foods and gourmet markets.) I appreciate cookbooks that introduce me to new ingredients, such as sea buckthorn and samphire, but if *I* can't find them, they may be out of reach for you.

Plus, Dr. Weil, who inspired the restaurant, is well known for his own dietary recommendations, some of which don't match mine. Some do: smaller portions of seasonal, organic ingredients; less emphasis on a big slab of moo (more fish, heavy on the veggies and grain). He advises to cut back on sweets and eat smaller portions (which I do, my chocolate reputation notwithstanding: Give me one perfect chocolate truffle, not a pound of M&Ms) but he doesn't make THAT big of a distinction between types of sugar. I've found, purely for myself, that I'm fine with agave, honey, maple syrup, but refined sugars are best left to once-in-a-great while.

The bottom line, though: Do I want to cook these recipes? Do YOU?

I usually try to cook two or three dishes from a cookbook before offering an opinion. As it turns out, I made only one so far, and it turned out quite well. The curried cauliflower soup is vegan, out-of-the-ordinary, and delicious. In addition to the cauliflower and curry powder, it uses a third of a cup of raw cashews, a can of coconut milk, and a few more spices (turmeric, cumin, and a touch of cinnamon). It was fast enough to put together for a weeknight meal, and reheated easily for lunch. (Come to think of it, it's also rather frugal.) I still haven't made the drink that had made me shout YES to the review offer, but it'll happen: Basically it's soda water, fresh lime juice, agave nectar (you can find that in most health food stores, even one of the warehouse stores occasionally), and pulverized ginger juice (e.g. blend fresh ginger with water, strain). (Several of the drinks are alcoholic, if that's more your speed, such as a tamarind margarita, or the Peacemaker with honey, black tea, lemon juice, rye whiskey, and Averna liqueur.)

I have bookmarks in several more recipes, but they've been stuck in the "Maybe I'll get around to it" category. Tofu curry with cauliflower, rice noodles, and cashews, for instance. Miso-marinated black cod, which must wait for me to see that fish in the store. Roasted butternut squash, apple, and pomegranate salad with balsamic vinaigrette.

But some are suitable only for a leisurely afternoon puttering in the kitchen. The summer vegetable casserole was briefly a candidate for the Thanksgiving table (we have a vegetarian guest every year and cater to his needs... I'm such a nice friend), with layers of an eggplant relish, fennel braised in orange juice and wine, squash and tomato, and a Parmesan-bread crumb topping. Others just don't appeal to me (sorry, I'm not a kale girl). And then, of course, there's the challenge of finding ingredients; I can get halloumi nearby but I'm not going to bet that's the case for you.

One thing I would like, given the health-conscious premise for this cookbook, is nutritional information for each recipe. Dr Weil may not count calories, carbs, etc., but some people -- including many of the health-conscious people who'll be drawn to this cookbook -- do.

Still, I _like_ this cookbook. I appreciate its sensibilities, even if I don't use it very often. If you have a good source of organic produce and some exotic ingredients, it might be just the ticket for you.

A flexitarian delight and then some

Sam Fox is a restaurateur. Michael Stebner is an executive chef and of course Andrew Weil is a legendary health guru with international tastes and a surprising expertise in the kitchen. What they've done together aside from writing this book is found and operate True Food Kitchens, a growing chain of restaurants where the emphasis is on food that is (as in the subtitle of this book) "Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure."

What this means can be discerned by going over the recipes in the book. This is not a vegan or even a vegetarian cuisine. This is an international cuisine fit for an epicurean flexitarian! The emphasis is on the fresh, bold, and organic with little meat, some chicken and a bit more fish. Many of the recipes are inspired by Weil's concept of the "Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid." There's a color photo of the "pyramid" in all its glory on page 46--no words, just the foods themselves. At the apex is chocolate (!) followed by red wine, food supplements, spices like ginger and chiles, and foods like fish, beans, avocados, mushrooms, veggies and fruits, etc. (You can see the labeled pyramid at Dr. Weil's website.) At the base of the pyramid which represents foods that should form the bulk of our diet are the veggies and fruits.

Weil says that he used the Mediterranean diet as a template in his design of the pyramid. He explains that these foods and not the highly processed foods found in the stores and in most restaurants lead to less inflammation in the body and to a healthy life style. The cuisine (I'd call it an international cuisine based on healthy food choices), Weil writes, "includes fewer foods of animal origin, except for fish and high-quality dairy products like yogurt and natural cheeses." (p. 47)

Yes, this is the middle way of moderation between veganism and bacon-corn syrup gluttony (if you will). Vegetarians are not going to be thrilled and vegans are going to be offended. But there are recipes for vegans dishes (e.g., Butternut Squash-Apple Soup with a cashew base on page 97) in contrast to, well, the recipe for a "Bison Umami Burger" on page 140.

Dr. Weil doesn't eat beef but believes that bison is a healthy substitute. I would say, perhaps--at least for now until and if it becomes popular, and then the food producers will make it as unhealthy as commercially produced beef. There's a recipe for the (vegan) "Umami Sauce" on page 236. Key ingredients are tamari, nutritional yeast and garlic.

I am writing this before dinner and wow are the recipes making me hungry! This is the perfect cook book for me since I've long followed a similar diet and much prefer cooking at home with my choice of ingredients done my way to going out to eat. But compared to the authors of this book I'm just a chef's helper with a limited range. Weil, Fox and Stebner demonstrate a deep and abiding knowledge about and love for food. We're all foodies under the skin, but some like Weil are really in another league. I've read and reviewed several of Dr. Weil's books, always favorably and always with some reservations. I'll skip the reservations here (since they are few and insignificant) and just say that I am amazed at Weil's understanding of food and his vast experience. He has clearly spent a good portion of his life experiencing food, thinking about food, eating food and cooking food! (And yes I thought he was doing yoga.)

The book begins with an Introduction that is an interesting conversation about food and the restaurant business among Weil, Fox and Stebner. Next comes "The True Food Pantry," a list and description of somewhat unusual but characteristic ingredients, such as agave nectar, chiles, flax meal, tahini, etc. Then come the recipes in chapters entitled, "Breakfast," "Appetizers," "Salads," and so on to "Desserts" and "drinks." There are mini essays on such things as "True Whole Grains" (page 21) and chapter intros written by Weil or Stebner. The recipes are also introduced and/or commented upon by either Weil or Stebner identified by their initials.

The book is beautifully designed and edited, full of easy to read bits of information about food and diet. The full color photos of the foods are gorgeously mouth-watering.

--Well, okay, one reservation: this cuisine requires not just a love of food but the time and energy to go to good markets on almost a daily basis and to keep on hand (and fresh!) a number of specialty ingredients. I'm thinking of the pickled cucumbers, the umami sauce, the dashi sauce (requiring, e.g., kombu and bonito flakes) and a variety of chiles and of course fresh fruits and vegetables. The only way you can achieve this is to really immerse yourself in food and to love what you're doing. But I think the reward is well worth the effort because not only will you be eating healthier, you will find that you can eat reasonable amounts of delicious food with relish, and because you have spent that extra energy shopping and cooking, you will have help in keeping a healthy weight.

Favorite substitution: Kalamata olives for anchovies in the Vegetarian Caesar Dressing on page 233.

Favorite tip: When toasting nuts realize that they are still cooking after being removed from the heat source. So as a general rule, "once you can smell the nuts, they are done." (p. 243) I learned this the hard way with sesame seeds and foraged Digger Pine nuts.

In a nutshell, this is now easily my favorite cook book.

Great study guide

This is a great book to practice alternative question that you do not find in your standard NCLEX prep book but will encounter on the NCLEX exam. I love that the answers and rationals are on the same page as the questions. It is frustrating when you have to go searching for the answer section.

About the Author

Dr. K.M. Gupta is a professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad, India. He earned his diploma in mechanical engineering (Hons), bachelor of engineering (AMIE) in mechanical engineering and ME (Hons) in 1977. He earned his PhD from the University of Allahabad. His research interests are in the fields of materials science, composite materials, stress analysis, and solid mechanics. Professor Gupta has authored 28 books, and 120 papers, and is the editor-in-chief of two journals, The International Journal of Materials, Mechanics and Manufacturing(IJMMM), and International Journal of Materials Science and Engineering (IJMSE).

Humane, beautifully written, smart, thoughtful

I've read a lot of academic work on loneliness, and the sterility of such work amazes me. This book stands out in its passionate and personal tone--and in its focus on how loneliness can help people grow. ("I realized that man's inevitable and infinite loneliness is not solely an awful condition of human existence but that it is also the instrument through which man experiences new compassion and new beauty"--p. x in 1961 edition). The writing style is unusual, and may not be for everyone, but Moustakas' tone deeply affected my read of the book, and in my opinion, is one of the book's many strengths. It is a philosophical treatise that can help illuminate the assumptions in shallow self-help books. Obviously, I highly recommend it.

Compassionate & rich

Written long before the flood of shallow self-help books that engulf us today, this slim volume remains one of the finest explorations of loneliness I've ever read. More philosophy than psychology -- a meditation on the state of loneliness -- it's written in a personal tone, one that invites the reader into a warm circle of understanding. There's nothing maudlin or cheaply sentimental here, no superficial quick fixes or allegedly spiritual steps to follow. It's written to make you think as deeply as you feel, to look at loneliness clearly, and to enable you to recognize the loneleness of others -- which is not unlike our own, is it?

Again, if you're used to contemporary self-help books, you may be startled to find this is nothing like them. It's written for intelligent, thoughtful human beings who are willing to give up the comforting womb of ego & self-pity, and discover something worthwhile & meaningful in the cold darkness that often surrounds us. The more you read it, the more you realize that the last thing in the world it's about is, "me, me, me." But it may well help you to discover You -- a more mature You, a little closer to wholeness than before. It definitely deserve to be in print once more -- highly recommended!

A great help!

I decided to learn guitar at the young age of 70. I discovered Justin's site on the internet and have been working my way (slowly) through his beginner's course. I was frustrated at not being able to find good sheet music for the songs in his course. His book, Beginner's Songbook, is excellent. It gives you more help than any other source I have found. I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn to play the guitar.

Required supplement for any beginner

I am more of a fingerstyle guitarist so I prefer to devote more of my practice time on that rather than strumming. However, I don't want to neglect that skill or at least the ability to strum out some singalong tunes if the occasion calls for it.
Justin's Beginner's Songbook is the perfect tool to help me practice strumming patterns while learning some singalong tunes.

Contrary to some other reviewers of this book, I like the book's set-up. New chords are given at the beginning at each stage only. There isn't a section that gives you chord diagrams so it forces you to memorize chord diagrams as you progress through the book rather than rely on convenient chord diagrams above every lyric. It isn't a chord reference book so if you're looking for that, there are plenty of cheap ones on Amazon or even free on the internet.

The chord name is given above the words of the lyrics and on the corresponding page Justin gives his recommended strumming pattern as well as some tips and trivia. There are other chord strum-a-long books out there but most of them usually just give the chords and the lyrics and not much else. You definitely get a bit more with this book. That being said, if you are familiar with Justin's videos, there really isn't anything new in the book from what he says/does in his videos. So if you are looking for something new, you may be disappointed. I purchased this mainly because I am a visual learner and seeing strumming patterns and lyrics right in front of me makes learning a lot easier (as opposed to watching Justin's videos over and over again). If you have surpassed the beginner level in Justin's guitar course, I'd recommend skipping this.

The song selection is great! With 100 songs, there is something for everyone across every skill level. Artists like Taylor Swift, Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, Don MacLean, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash are represented in the selection.

I definitely recommend using this book with Justin's free online videos on YouTube or on his website as it gives the book's lessons more context.

I ordered this book through a third-party seller supposedly located in Indiana, USA. Dispatch was quick but it took a while to arrive because it actually was shipped from overseas. As of this writing, Amazon doesn't offer this title directly but don't let that stop you.

Highly recommended for beginners really looking to develop their skills and creativity.

Don't want to gush, but....

This songbook is most helpful as you take his online course, but I'm sure it would be helpful even if you aren't.
When you get a good teacher like Justin, you realize how many mediocre-or even bad ones you have had to endure.
The book has the lyrics and music (guitar chords) along with suggested strumming patterns. You also get his help online on his website, justinguitar.com, or on You tube. He plays the songs on video where you can play along with him.
I get the feeling that I have a personal teacher who cares, (he has a friendly manner) is organized, never patronizing, doesn't skip steps, and has had years of musical training and experience.
It probably doesn't hurt that he lives and works in one of the musical capitals of the world-London.
Some of the songs I didn't know such as Lennon's "Working Class Hero" and "Common People" by the Pulp. I enjoyed reading the lyrics which weren't the usual love songs. They tell an interesting story and have social significance. However, there are more "popular" songs too. Enough songs to keep you going and interested.
If a beginner like me without a good musical education, your musical terminology will improve as you start each song. For example,in the first songs you are introduced to the use of capos and what off-beats are.
The book is more than a book, it's a musical journey. One that is just right-not too easy-or too hard. You can do it, but you grow as you keep learning and trying.
There is a forum on his site where he answers questions and other learners share their experiences playing the songs. Also where he didn't play a song, I found a student of his playing the song on You tube, and it helped me a lot. Where else do you get a songbook and a free forum (a community of people like yourself) asking questions, sharing difficulties and getting advice from Justin and the other guitar learners?

Millie Marotta is a freelance illustrator working in her studio by the sea in a little corner of West Wales. She has developed a mild obsession with all things flora and fauna, which, along with intricate pattern and detail, remains an ongoing theme in her art. She works in both traditional and digital media for editorial, advertising, merchandising, web, and textiles. Her clients range from Virgin Atlantic to Penguin Books, and she is the author of Animal Kingdom (Lark) and Tropical World (Lark).

LOVE IT!!

I LOVE THIS COLORING BOOK!! I really like animals in general and this book contains some of my favorite creatures. I also really like the style of the drawing because the parts are not so small that it is a nightmare to color, and not to annoyingly big. I also appreciate how they really do resemble the living animals while adding in her own design. Great coloring book for anyone looking for something new.

Love the listing for the creatures as well as the creatures represented in this work!

This is my favorite book by, Millie Marotta. Why? Well, the first thing is the animals she chose for the book as I am learning about them as I work. The second reason is the fact that she identified all of the animals and good thing! I have a heavy Biology background as does my husband and for some of the creatures contained in the book, neither he or I knew what they were without looking them up!

I was not an immediate fan of Ms. Marotta's style and it took me time to get there. At first, I was so overwhelmed by the lines and with my own wondering how best to do the images justice but then, deciding to do what I wished to do. Now, her works are a favorite of mine and my husband loves to see what I do with the images I work on. I also love reading up on the creatures listed in all of her books.

A hint for some who may have questions regarding creatures listed is to look them up on Google based on their characteristics. For example, looking up "animals of the Savannah" will provide a huge listing but narrowing that down with, "birds of the Savannah" and, "birds with long tails of the Savannah" will help. I'll attach this to her other reviews for that particular book. This has helped me locate the creatures in her other works so that I would be able to color them as they are in life. I know, I'm one of those who must do them true to life! :)

I need to thank her for ultimately listening to her fans as so few artists do and this. Her most recent gem, this coloring book, is a new favorite!

I love the very intricate patterns in the different animals

I love the very intricate patterns in the different animals. There are some that are duplicated with not as much detail, giving the colorist the option of adding their own patterns.The only problem that I have is that you cannot use markers.I made that mistake and it bled through.It is good paper and gels seem to be OK.
