A Treasury of Biblical Insights
By Timothy Carl Swanson
George E. Mendenhall is one of the "titans" of twentieth-century biblical scholarship. His researches have revolutionized our knowledge of the origins of the ancient historical phenomenon known as Israel. He maintains that Israel was the consequence of two principal historical factors: the first was the widespread self-destruction of the great Near-Eastern empires/civilizations at the end of the Late Bronze Age; the second was a radically new religious vision of how a humanly tolerable society can come into being even in a world wracked by the insanely violent machinations of the crumbling empires that brought about human suffering and death on vast scales. The historical Moses saw the divine as One and not as the plurality of pagan deities (who represented the powers with which man must contend for survival but which he can neither predict nor control); and that the will of this One for mankind lies in the ethical dimension of human life and not at all on the plane of power, sex, and wealth -- that, in other words, this One represents the utter repudiation of the religio-political systems of pagan antiquity and their replacement by devotion and commitment to ethic -- to love -- rather than power and its concomitants.

Mendenhall saw that earliest Israel was brought into existence by Moses' religious vision, expressed through an analogy between an ancient political-legal form and a novel religious-ethical commitment. This form -- the covenant or suzerainty treaty -- was employed to represent the proposed relation, disclosed in the terrifying theophany at Sinai, between the One called Yahweh and the little band of "Hebrews" only recently escaped from corveé labor in Egypt. The analogy replaces political-legal concepts with religious-ethical ones.

Mendenhall elaborated his analysis of the "covenant form" in relation to earliest Israel in a series of scholarly papers and monographs, starting in the mid-twentieth century, which made use of legal, political, cultural and linguistic history and insights from archaeology, sociology and anthropology. A mature, scholarly version of some of his key theses was presented in The Tenth Generation: the Origins of the Biblical Tradition [TG] (1973), which, fortunately, is still in print. He laid out a beautiful conspectus of the entire sweep of Israel's history (with revealing commentary on much of the biblical literature occasioned by that history), intended for general readership, in Ancient Israel's Faith and History: An Introduction to the Bible in Context [AIFH] (2001). Now, in his 90th year, Mendenhall gives us Our Misunderstood Bible [OMB].

Throughout his long career he has concerned himself to engage, not only the scholarly world, but also those who are not scholars specializing in his fields of expertise. He has done this in the settings of classroom and seminar, of course, but also in informal talks and study sessions with small groups of religiously committed folk. Material from these informal sessions was collected, organized, and edited to produce the afore-mentioned AIFH. The emphasis in Mendenhall's presentations has always been the centrality of covenant as a functioning social reality (and not merely a theological-literary-notional one) and its fate from inception at Sinai throughout the subsequent tumultuous history of Israel -- from the Twelve Tribe Federation to the birth of the early Church. The interested reader might consult AIFH, pp. 57ff, for a discussion of the covenant as way-of-life in ancient Israel.

Informing Mendenhall's analyses is a fundamental realization, woefully unappreciated by most biblical scholars: that the most authentic embodiment of Israel's covenant-faith was in the community life of the hundreds of little agricultural villages that formed the indispensable substrate of Israelite society from the earliest times on. The villages preserved the covenant faith of Moses for centuries even in its most archaic features; it was from the villages that many of the prophets hailed; nor can Christians forget tiny Nazareth, their Master's boyhood village. Moreover, the villages' conservatism insulated the representation of their shared religious faith in oral tradition from the incessant flux of linguistic change characteristic of the larger urban units, especially those with concentrations of literate "knowledge elites" such as Jerusalem with its large cohort of bureaucrats and scribes.

Yet the Hebrew Scriptures as they have existed since several centuries before the time of Jesus are necessarily the work of precisely these scribes. The transformation of oral traditions into sacred texts was thus the work of ancient urban scholars to whom -- despite their putative zeal for fidelity to tradition -- the language, ideas, customs, and events of the remote past had to a significant degree become unintelligible. And how much more is this apt to be the case when, in much later times, scholars in quite alien cultural environments translate biblical Hebrew into modern languages!

It was therefore virtually inevitable that the text of the Old Testament as we have it today, whether in Hebrew or in translation, should contain a good many mystifying passages and moreover passages that merely seem clear; and there is a parallel situation with respect to the New Testament. It is surely one of the concerns of the biblical scholar to clarify these passages when it is still possible to do so.

This is what Mendenhall does in OMB. In 20 extremely short chapters he addresses the following:

Why did Noah's ark land on Mount Ararat? (Genesis 8:4)

Why did the sun and moon stand still? (Joshua 10:12)

Who were the "Hebrews?" (I Samuel 28:3)

What did people do when they "worshiped?" (Exodus 12:27)

Why did "a virgin conceive?" (Isaiah 7:14, 16)

Why did God create the earth in seven days? (Genesis 2:2)

Why do "goodness and mercy persecute us?" (Psalm 23:6)

Why do children suffer for the sins of their fathers?

(Exodus 20:5)

Why they are not ten "commandments." (Deuteronomy 4:13)

Why are we asked to "do this in remembrance" of Jesus? (I

Corinthians 11:23-25)

Why are we called "children of God?" (John 1:12)

Why should we hate father and mother? (Luke 14:26, Psalm

139:21-22)

Why should we "walk humbly" with God? (Micah 6:8)

Why not "an eye for an eye?" (Exodus 21:23-24, Matthew 5:3)

Why did 603,550 men of war leave Egypt with Moses? (Numbers

1:46, 2:32)

Why did Moses marry a black African woman? (Numbers 12:1)

Why did Abraham have two names? (Genesis 17:5)

Who were the ancestors of Jerusalem? (Ezekiel 16:3)

Who was "God Almighty?" (Exodus 6:3)

What is bad about worshiping groves? (Judges 3:7)

The little book concludes with a short "summing up."

Although the Mosaic covenant (and its historical background) runs as a "sub-text" through OMB, the book pursues no explicit unifying theological theme; rather, its short chapters constitute an engrossing collection of "scholar's notes" on biblical texts that have puzzled laymen and clergy - or that have not puzzled them but should have.

Each chapter fascinates in its own way. I found the explanation of "do this in remembrance of me" to have the most startling relevance to Christians' understanding of that central element of their worship, the Eucharist. "Remembrance" in Mendenhall's elucidation has a significance quite different from that latterly accorded the word in the conventional theologies of all branches of Christianity: namely it is an oath of loyalty (a sacramentum) to the Master and His Way. This significance partakes of the nature of the ancient Mosaic covenant, in which the believer conditionally curses himself, and explains why participation in the Eucharist was both central to the life of the earliest Christians and treated by them as a matter of utmost -- even potentially lethal -- seriousness.

Neither the much-reviled "fundamentalists" nor the somewhat less notorious "minimalists" will find Mendenhall's clarifications particularly congenial, I fear. This is for two reasons, both of them summarized in the word history. The minimalists will be put off by his insistence that the biblical texts are products of the actual historical experience of Israel, a religious-social (and only later, ethnic-political) phenomenon that arose in the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age -- not merely propagandistic scribal fictions from the Hellenistic-Roman periods. The fundamentalists will perhaps resent his treatment of the texts as products of the historical experience of Israel and not merely as a collection of divinely-dictated "proof-texts" for their favorite doctrines.

But for those committed to taking the Bible seriously on its own terms, OMB is welcome assistance from a great scholar, and an invitation to the treasures of TG and AIFH.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, by Erik Larson

Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Devil in the White City, delivers a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: In the Garden of Beasts is a vivid portrait of Berlin during the first years of Hitler’s reign, brought to life through the stories of two people: William E. Dodd, who in 1933 became America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s regime, and his scandalously carefree daughter, Martha. Ambassador Dodd, an unassuming and scholarly man, is an odd fit among the extravagance of the Nazi elite. His frugality annoys his fellow Americans in the State Department and Dodd’s growing misgivings about Hitler’s ambitions fall on deaf ears among his peers, who are content to “give Hitler everything he wants.” Martha, on the other hand, is mesmerized by the glamorous parties and the high-minded conversation of Berlin’s salon society—and flings herself headlong into numerous affairs with the city’s elite, most notably the head of the Gestapo and a Soviet spy. Both become players in the exhilarating (and terrifying) story of Hitler’s obsession for absolute power, which culminates in the events of one murderous night, later known as “the Night of Long Knives.” The rise of Nazi Germany is a well-chronicled time in history, which makes In the Garden of Beasts all the more remarkable. Erik Larson has crafted a gripping, deeply-intimate narrative with a climax that reads like the best political thriller, where we are stunned with each turn of the page, even though we already know the outcome. --Shane Hansanuwat

The evil that men do
By Chris Swanson
It has been observed that for evil to win all that needs happen is for good men to do nothing. That was what the United States government did, at least officially, for much of the lead-up to World War II. Too often chances to speak out and try to stop the madness that was engulfing Germany were ignored. Too frequently the atrocities were overlooked. Too many times our response to the crisis over there was nothing, nothing, nothing...

But there were exceptions. George Messersmith, who worked at the Berlin embassy, was one of those who tried, often in vain, to bring about some change in the US policies, though he was often ignored as having too vivid of an imagination. So, too, were various Jewish groups in the USA, though they were often ignored for being Jewish. And, eventually, so did William Dodd, the United States ambassador to Germany, though he was ignored because, frankly, too many people didn't want to believe any of what was happening in Berlin.

Before reading this book I had a slightly better than average knowledge of the history of World War II and what led up to it. But even for me there were things to learn. I'd never heard of Dodd or Messersmith. Never heard of Rudolph Diels, or Ernst Hanfstaengl. I knew, at least a bit, about the Night of Long Knives and some what lead up to it, including Ernst Rohm's penchant for pretty young men, but I didn't really grasp much of what was going on that led up to it.

Now, thanks to Erik Larson's latest work, I know these people and I have a much, much improved understanding of what was going on in Germany from 1933 to 1938. Larson gives you a great "on the ground" view of what was really happening, what people thought was happening, what everyone said was happening and why the differences between these things matter. You really get a feel for how Berlin functioned, or didn't function, during this time period.

Larson's previous work, Thunderstruck, where he tried too hard to link the stories of Dr Crippen and Marconi, didn't really work for me, which was a disappointment, since The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America remains one of my favorite books. I'm happy to say this book is at least as good and engaging as "Devil in the White City". This is an excellent, well-written, suspenseful book. Even though I did know the fates of some of the people involved, Larson's writing was still engaging enough to keep me interested, and to occasionally make me wonder if my memory of their lives was wrong (it wasn't).

Anyone with even a casual interest in the events leading up to the war will find this an invaluable read. It's easily the best book I've read this year, and likely to stay that way. A truly wonderful read!

Another telling work by Erik Larson
By Steven Peterson
This is the fourth book written by Erik Larson that I have read. In my view, this quartet is a pretty powerful body of work: The Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, and Isaac's Storm)--and now In the Garden of Beasts. As with Larson's other works, there are several layers to this work. Larson begins by noting that (Page xiv): "This is a work of nonfiction."

At one level, this is a portrayal of a family. Key characters are William Dodd, an academic desperate to write a book on the South who finds himself oddly enough tapped to become the American Ambassador to Germany in the very early years of Hitler's rule of the country. There is also considerable detail given to Dodd's daughter, Martha. She was coming off a failed marriage and she (and her brother and William's wife) accompanied Dodd in his service in Germany.

At another level, the book is about the gathering horror of the Third Reich. Sometimes, Germany seems like a modern, civilized country. At other times, though, the darkness of Nazism manifests itself. One small vignette: H. V. Kaltenborn's advocacy of Germany--and his family's terror at a Hitler demonstration where they were frightened by thugs for not carrying out the German salute with the arm. Other small incidents that portend what is to come pop up over the course of the work, providing a dark backdrop to the surface story.

We see Dodd's interaction with key leaders such as Goebbels and Goring. We read of him trying to protect American interests while becoming concerned about what was happening in Germany. And seeing how his superiors did not want to hear negative reports from him. His daughter? She enjoyed her freedom with a series of romances--including with the famous World War I pilot, Udet, and--extraordinarily enough--the head of the Gestapo, Diels .

There is tautness to the work, as it moves toward its climax with the Night of the Long Knives. The book closes out with Dodd and his family's return to the US and events that took place thereafter.

Another wonderful work by Erik Larson.

History as a novelist might present it.
By Jill Meyer
Erik Larson is not a novelist but his books on historical subjects are as beautifully written as if a novelist had written them. He has written about Chicago and the 1893 World's Fair, a terrible hurricane in Galveston, Texas, and a doctor/murderer in London. In all his books, he juxtaposes two events or characters and flits between the two. In this book, "In the Garden of Beasts", he presents the Dodd family of four in 1933 and the growing menace of Hitler and the Nazi party. It's brilliant writing at its best.

William Dodd was a professor at the University of Chicago and a product of a southern upbringing. He was mild-mannered and subtle, but fairly ambitious, career-wise. As a self-described "Jeffersonian Democrat", Dodd had come to the attention of newly-inaugurated Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when Roosevelt and his State Department were looking for a new US ambassador to Germany. Adolf Hitler had come to power in Germany at about the same time as Roosevelt in the United States. Both faced Depression-wracked countries and both set about helping to heal the economic woes. Hitler's plans were much more ambitious at that point; getting out of the Versailles Treaty restrictions and cleansing Germany of her Jewish population were also on the agenda. Roosevelt's appointment of William Dodd as the United States Ambassador to Germany brought many questions from old diplomatic "hands" at the State Department as well as among Roosevelt's aides. Was Dodd "tough" enough to deal with Hitler? And, what WAS "tough enough" in dealing with Hitler and the growing German menace? And, what WAS the "growing German menace"? Lots of questions in 1933 wouldn't be answered until later; later, after "The Night of Long Knives", "Krystalnach", and the whole bloody butchery of WW2.

Dodd brought with him to Berlin in 1933 his wife, and two grown children, Martha and Bill, Jr. It was Martha - then aged 22 and full of life and with a secret, soon-to-be-divorced husband back home - who flirted with both the night-life and the political intrigue of Berlin. She landed in exalted circles - both artistic and political - and lead a rather exhausting love life with Germans, Americans, and Russians.

Life in Berlin in 1933 was easy-going, but still "edgy" as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party fought for a political future. President Hindenburg was still alive and Hitler was his Chancellor. He was still not in command and would not be so until Hindenburg's death nearly a year later. Hitler was also fighting within his own ranks. His old comrade, Ernst Rohm, led the SA and it was a threat to Hitler. "The Night of Long Knives", in 1934, was the coup staged by Hitler as he got rid of Rohm and a lot of other political enemies. William Dodd, sickened by the violence and the knowledge that Hitler was on the road to world-power, began to speak out firmly about the Nazi regime and the threat it posed.

"In the Garden" is a masterpiece of writing for those interested in the subject. His book, "Devil in the White City", with its story of Chicago and a mass-murderer, might have appealed more to a wider audience, but this book is wonderful for the history buffs among us. I also appreciate the sources he lists at the end of the book.

Buried Secrets: Truth and Human Rights in Guatemala, by V. Sanford

Between the late 1970s and the mid 1980s, Guatemala was torn by a civil war which came to be known as La Violencia. During this time of mass terror and extreme violence, more than 600 massacres occurred in villages destroyed by the army, one and a half million people were displaced, and more than 200,000 civilians murdered. 83% of the victims were Maya, the indigenous people of Guatemala. Buried Secrets brings these chilling statistics to life as it chronicles the journey of Mayan survivors seeking truth, justice, and community healing and demonstrates that the Guatemalan army carried out a systematic and intentional genocide against the Maya. Victoria Sanford provides us with an insider's look at the workings of the Commission for Historical Clarification through the exhumation of clandestine cemeteries. The book is based on exhaustive research, including more than 400 testimonies from massacre survivors, interviews with members of the forensic team, human rights leaders, high-ranking military officers, guerrilla combatants, and government officials. Buried Secrets traces truth-telling and political change from isolated Maya villages to national political events, and provides a unique look into the experiences of Maya survivors as they struggle to rebuild their communities and lives.

Attitude is Critical
By Bernie Federmann Lompoc Ch
This book has helped me in both my personal life and in my teachings to the church in which I pastor. This is not a theological piece filled with the depth of doctrine. It was not written to be that - it is howevever a look at biblical perspective to having a healthy heart - the type God can really use. Don't waste so much energy on the negative and on your past - look to all that Jesus provides for you and the power for you to live a heart-healthy successful life.
I love this book and I love Wayne! He is the real deal and New Hope and more imporatantly his heart to serve the body of Christ is proof of this.

I read this book years ago. The recent purchase was for the student leaders at a Christian school that I serve. They are reading the book with their sponsors/counselors. I am confident that this book will impact the readers.

For your reference, I read about two books a month, and I'm a Christian school principal. I also hold multiple advanced degrees, including Ed.D. All this to simply inform you that I am an avid reader who is familiar with the topic of Christian discipline.

Attack with Mikhail Tal (Cadogan Chess Books), by Mikhail Tal, Iakov Damsky

The legendary Mikhail Tal was the finest ever exponent of attacking chess. His all-out sacrificial style took him all the way to the World Championship title. Dogged by ill-health, Tal's reign was a short one, and he was never able to regain his crown, but Tal remained an outstanding player right up to his death in 1992. His departure has taken away one of the chess world's most charismatic figures; a player who excited chess passions wherever he went. In this, his last book, written together with Russian sports journalist Iakov Damsky, Tal shows how to unleash devastating attacks in all kinds of positions.

Attack!!!
By Murtuza Hashim
This book is structured into nine chapters.

1. Enemy King in the center - shows how to keep the king in the center and to attack it.

2. Breakthrough in the Center - The theme still revolves around trapping the enemy king in the center for material sacrifice.

3. The Assault Ratio - Shows how to tear apart the enemy fortress

4. Invasion trajectories - Shows how to attack on the diagonals

5. Lines of Communication - Shows how to break the enemies lines of communications to set up an attack.

6 Outposts - Shows how a piece outpost beyond the 4th rank is a thorn in the enemies army.

7. Eliminating Defenders - Shows how to get rid of those pesky defenders when attacking.

8. At the Royal Court - Shows how to break apart a castled position.

9. Destroying the Fortress walls - summs up with bxh7+ and double bishop sacrifices when the enemey pawn cover has not been touched. Also nxf7 and nxg7 sacrifices.

There is a chapter missing on queenside sacrifices, but alas the magician from riga passed away before completing the book, so it's not his fault.

This is as advanced as attacking manuals get, but well worth the effort.
By Andre E. Harding
There comes a point in a tournament chess player's development when they are familiar with the "standard" tactical [and positional] themes: they know to go for the kill on, say, f7/f2 against a king stranded in the center (to me a "stranded" king is a stronger precondition for an early attack than an "uncastled" one). They can find (or at least know when to look for) "King's Field" sacrifices and combinations. They can find "Mate in X" when the position requires it.

To me, this brilliant work is about COMPENSATION for sacrificed material in the form of much greater COORDINATION of one's forces than the opponent has of his. And often, the disparity of coordination that pops up is not immediate; rather, the attacking side has a greater ABILITY to develop/coordinate their pieces in the ensuing battle. The opponent's pieces may find themselves sealed off on one flank, or unable to rush to the defense in time.

The thread running through Rudolph Spielmann's THE ART OF SACRIFICE IN CHESS (which I reveiewed previously) is the notion of COMPENSATION when the sacrifices are not of a decisive nature. Upon looking at his examples, the reader can rationalize the material investment as being entirely justified.

With ATTACK WITH MIKHAIL TAL, however, this notion of COMPENSATION is much less clear for, I suspect, most of us. The 8th World Champion (1960) was adept at "Making it Work." The defensive resistance put up by Morphy's opponents was, generally, pathetic. By contrast, Tal stormed his way to the top by hacking to pieces many of the greatest chess players the world has ever seen (for example, he went 4-0 against Bobby Fischer in the 1959 Candidates Tournament, and beat Mikhail Botvinnik by 4 points in the 1960 World Championship Match).

The attacking prowess of the Magician from Riga becomes understandable when reading this work, because he and Damsky explain the thought process behind it so well. All of this said, it takes a great amount of study and boldness to try and integrate this into one's own play! I know I certainly haven't been able to do it yet, but will continue to try!

Great Book to learn Attacking
By Han S. Kang
Awesome book, written very conversationally so it's very accessible. Very interesting insights into a more aggressive style of play (which personally suits me, as I hate boring positional games). Recently purchased another Tal book, if that indicates at all my impressed response to this book.

The Duduk and National Identity in Armenia, by Andy Nercessian

The book is an outline of the Armenian duduk, a cylindrical double-reed aerophone made of apricot-wood, and its relation to the Armenian identity. It attempts to deepen our understanding of musical instruments not only through an examination of musical and constructional features, but also through the application of a sociocultural framework which allows a theorization of the idea of the instrument as social being.

The discussion is centered on the different contexts in which the duduk is played. These are divided into two categories: solo and ensemble. Solo duduk performance includes the remarkable phenomenon of Armenian funeral music activity. Other contexts include special celebrations of national culture, duduk competitions, the recording studio and the film music studio. The main ensemble contexts of duduk performance are the Armenian folk orchestras. These are essentially Soviet creations designed to "advance" folk music. Their impact on folk music and folk musical life on Armenia is discussed with special attention to the "adjustments" which were necessary for the success of this institution. Folk ensembles have long been emblems of Armenian national culture which might explain how they have survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and its Marxist-Leninist policies which were these orchestras' very raison d'être.

The book will appeal to anyone with an interest in organological theory, Armenian culture, or world music.

Review
Andrew Nercessian seems in a unique position to advance the true cause of this instrument. He has penetrated the roots of its current practise and history in Armenia in a beautifully thorough and balanced manner, interspersed with entertaining and fascinating accounts of his experiences as musician and researcher. His writings go a long way to understand the relation between musical perceptions between cultures. I strongly recommend musicians of all persuasions to have this book on their shelves before it's too late. (Benedict Mason, composer From The Foreword)

Roger Federer: Spirit of a Champion, by Chris Bowers

Roger Federer’s astounding, all-round ability on grass and clay has made him one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. With 13 Grand Slam wins and an Olympic gold medal under his belt, the Swiss star has already achieved legendary status. This authoritative and affectionate biography traces Federer’s rise from his first tentative strokes with a racket through his early years in an elite French academy and his struggles with the sudden death of his first real coach and mentor. It also examines how he bounced back from one of the most challenging periods of his career when a serious illness and a dip in form caused him to break his run of successive Wimbledon championship wins and lose his number-one spot to rival Rafael Nadal. Roger’s professionalism and charm, as well as the time he devotes to his charitable foundation, have won him huge amounts of respect from his fellow sportsmen and tennis professionals alike. This is a candid look at one of the most winning and dynamic figures in modern sport.

Only for the most avid Federer fan
By Klipspringer
Let it be known that there are few more avid fans of tennis in general, and Roger Federer in particular, than me. Thus, it would not have taken much to satisfy my hunger for even a marginally revealing and intimate biography of the game's biggest star. Unfortunately, I'm still hungry.

The book does relate some interesting facts about Federer's childhood, his family, and his entry into the sport of tennis. Federer's maturation from a young hothead and many early losses to possibly "the greatest ever" is described, match by match. But, there is very little emotion or "meat" in what is essentially a matter-of-fact chronological recall of his career through 2008.

The author is regarded as an experienced and renowned tennis writer, which made the presentation even more disappointing. As an advanced player myself, I was hoping for a bit of analysis from a player's perspective of what sets Federer apart from the rest; his shotmaking, techniques, match preparation, mental toughness, etc. I can learn more watching Federer on television.

In fairness, Federer himself has described his off-court life as "boring." Several times throughout the book, the author states how secretive and protective Federer is of his private life. Federer is obviously very good at this, since nothing in the book reveals much the public does not already know. The author is often apologetic for Federer, at times bordering on fawning. As such, it is not a biography, but more a tribute.

For a well-written, revealing look at the seamier sides of professional tennis, read Agassi's book. As for the definitive look at Roger Federer, we're still waiting.

Good info but a little biased towards RF
By tutsi buster lizzy
I have no problems with a biographer sympathizing with his subject, but in my opinion it limits the amount of truths you can uncover about someone's life. However, this is well written. The last quarter is mostly a running commentary of his important matches, but they need to be described to establish context. Please read if you are a Roger Federer fan. I am.
