Chase has been badly hurt in the past. He lied to his parents that he was engaged so they would stop shoving women at him. He was supposed to produce this mythical fiancee for a weekend aboard his parents yacht to celebrate their anniversary. He decided to hire the leading lady of a play he had to attend for business. Grace took the job because that would let her pay off the mob jerk who her mother owed money. He not only threatened her mother but her also. Grace felt something special with Chase, like she was home safe. This is the story of that weekend and beyond. Are the feelings real? Do they go both ways? Will she be able to get the mob jerk off her back or will he target Chase also? A wonderful well written read.

Lovely story. Very sexy and intense. I love fake boyfriend stories and this was a lot of fun. A good billionaire that was not a controlling jerk. Highly recommended.

The V-Twin Tuner's Handbook, Volume One is part of a three-volume set by Crystal Publications called the Performance Pro Series. Over 20 years ago my 86 ci Sportster was completely disassembled and meticulously packed away in storage boxes. After spending 18 long months building a custom house and encountering Murphy's Law on more than one occasion, I thought it was time to again have some fun and rebuild the 86 ci Sporty with contemporary performance parts. What I discovered was that I had lost touch with current performance technology and was rusty in the procedures for designing, building and tuning the engine and bike. At the time, I wished there was a book that could provide me the information needed to build an engine and bike that would run at the front of the pack. After much research and review of my notes, I finally broke the code and built what, at the time, was a very competitive hot street Sporty. The experience of not having a source of reliable and detailed performance information planted the seed to someday use my writing, marketing and computer technology skills along with my Harley engine building and racing skills to write a comprehensive book with useful information for Harley performance enthusiasts. Although that "someday" took 15 years to reach fruition, it resulted in my writing The Big Twin High-Performance Guide, Volume One, the first book in the Performance Pro Series.

To write a comprehensive performance book takes an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the needs of the high-performance enthusiast. Moreover, compiling useful, compelling, hard-to-find performance information is extremely time consuming and difficult. Foreword: The inspiration for this book originated from my randomly written notes, some of which were scribed more than 30 years ago. The notes included detailed information handy for designing, building and tuning a vehicle. Since this type of information is essential for optimizing performance, I decided to organize and published it as a book in 1993. It quickly became highly sought after by novice performance enthusiasts for its hard-to-find detailed information and by successful racers as a source of valuable reference material.

This new edition of The V-Twin Tuner’s Handbook becomes volume one of a multi-volume set. It is extensively revised, updated and enhanced over previous editions. It is nearly three times as comprehensive as earlier versions and includes over 30,000 additional words, 90 more pages and 116 new photos and illustrations.

Much new material has been added to the topic of internal combustion engine principles and concepts. Many new mathematical equations have been added to Section 1. Several of the equations in Chapter 11, Quarter And Eighth Mile Performance, have been optimized for greater accuracy over a wider spectrum by Patrick Hale, who markets a complete line of performance software through his company Racing Systems Analysis operating out of Phoenix Arizona. Additionally, almost 20 new reference tables have been added to Section 2, including some for the new Twin Cam 88 engine.

To help put things in perspective, The V-Twin Tuner’s Handbook, Volume Two, a brand-new volume, picks up where this volume stops and includes 14 substantial chapters and several appendices. The book begins with several detailed chapters discussing the theory and practical application of engine design, since successful tuning starts with proper engine design. Six more chapters cover the intricacies of dyno tuning and how not to get duped. Five additional chapters explain the details of step-by-step trackside tuning. Also included is a chapter on dyno-tested engine combinations, an extensive glossary and, as a bonus, a comprehensive update of Twin Cam 88 performance capabilities.

The in-depth and concise engine building and tuning information contained herein is hard to find, not to mention difficult and time consuming to compile and document. For these reasons, you will find that information conspicuously absent from typical run-of-the-mill high-performance books. It is hoped, however, that all the hard work and long hours required to develop the following exhaustive information will provide you with a better understanding of the internal combustion engine in general, and the Harley-Davidson V-twin engine in specific.

About the Author
D. William Denish grew up in the Midwest and as a teenager was introduced to Harley-Davidson dirt track racing by his Uncle Leo. At 14 he got his first motorcycle--a 10 horsepower Mustang. Before the summer ended, the Mustang had a big Amal carb, high compression cylinder head and racing cam.

In 1964 William bought his first Harley--a XLCH Sportster. Although just the sound of the Sportster's idle discouraged challengers, the only way to fly was with a stroker motor. So during the winter the engine was punched out to 65 cubic inches, which pushed quarter mile performance to 12.10 E.T. at 110 mph. Eventually engine displacement was bumped up to 86 cubic inches and performance improved to 11.10 E.T. at 121 mph. Not too shabby considering the narrow 4.00 rear tire and lack of a wheelie bar. Other projects included a bored and stroked 98 cubic inch Shovelhead and modified Evolution "dresser" for long distance touring.

D. William Denish has an extensive background in information technology. He enjoyed a successful 20 plus year career with Honeywell Information Systems as a software programmer, Education Product Manager, Product Marketing Manager, and Sales Training Program Manager. D. William's motorcycle experience spans more than 40 years of which the last 35 have been devoted to building, riding and racing Harleys. He is a contributing editor to popular Harley magazines and the founder and owner of Crystal Publications, publishers of quality high-performance books for the Harley-Davidson enthusiast.

About the Author

Gottfried Unden studied Biology and Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich where he received his Dr. rer. nat. Since 1993 he is Professor for Microbiology at the Department of Microbiology and Wine Research at the University of Mainz. The main areas of work is bacterial metabolism and its adaptation to changing environmental conditions like switching from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism, or the use of carboxylic acid as the substrate for growth, and the function of bacterial sensors.

Eckhard Thines studied Biology at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he received his PhD in Biotechnology. As a postdoctoral fellow he spent two years in Professor Nicholas Talbot's laboratory in Exeter, UK. He joined the Institute of Biotechnology and Drug Research (IBWF) in Kaiserslautern, Germany in 2006. Since 2009 he is CSO of the IBWF and since 2012 he is Professor for Biotechnology and Drug Research at the University of Mainz. His research focusses on fungicide research, mode of action research, target identification and validation as well as fungal secondary metabolism. Furthermore he is interested in host/pathogen-interactions in fungal plant diseases, e.g. Esca and grape black rot.

Anja Sch?ffler studied Biology at the University of Kaiserslautern. Her PhD focused on the characterisation of fungal natural products with antimicrobial activity. In 2010 she joined Professor William Fenical?s group at the Scripps Institute for Oceanography in San Diego, where she studied antibacterial natural products from streptomycetes. In 2011 she started a research fellowship at the Institute of Biotechnology and Drug Research (IBWF, Kaiserslautern). Her scientific work focuses on fungal bioactive natural products and assay development, the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, as well as isolation and taxonomy of fungi.

Paul M. Selzer studied biology, parasitology, and biochemistry at the University of T?bingen, Germany, where he also received his PhD in biochemistry. He spent three years at the Molecular Design Institute and the Parasitology and Tropical Disease Research Laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco. During his career he has worked as a researcher and scientific manager for several pharmaceutical companies, and is currently Head of Antiparasitics R&D at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, Germany. He is also a visiting professor and teacher at the Biochemistry Institute of the University of T?bingen, and an honorary professor of the Department of Infection, Immunity, and Inflammation at the University of Glasgow, UK.

Enjoyable Read

I saw this book in my newsfeed last week and had to snatch it up. I love witches and need more books about witches under my belt. The cover and synopsis drew me in and I one clicked.

This was a fast ready for me, I really enjoyed the story, especially the flash backs and occasional glimpses into the head of villain in the story. My only issue was it was hard to keep track of all the names and who was who with the younger sisters and their current selves, which took me out of the story at times while I tried to sort out who was who.

Overall, a very enjoyable read and I read it in one sitting.

I was definitely cast under a spell! SO GOOD!

I will be the first to admit that when it comes to the paranormal genre, I am very picky as to what books I will read. I think it has to be done in the right way in order for me to enjoy it because it can’t overshadow the plot. With my fascination of the Salem Witch Trials and everything surrounding that part of our history, I knew that I would want to read The Witches of BlackBrook the moment I stumbled across the synopsis. Needless to say, this one hit every single one of my requirements and then some. I was utterly consumed and unable to put this incredibly well written novel down!

“Together remain, and from fighting refrain, as the bond you share, time will not wear. So mote it be.”

As a female, I adore a good, strong heroine, but to have a book that was all about female empowerment and the spirit of a woman was incredibly special. It’s so rare to see a novel these days where the female steals the show, but Witches of BlackBrook really did just that. There was a small bit of romance, but the hero never outshone what the females could do. The main component is the bond of sisterhood; one that, no matter what, would survive through space, time, and any circumstance presented to these special sisters.

“Transported across time and space, she saw herself, Kara, and Kenna together, then watched as they shifted from one life to another, their faces different but their souls the same. Bound by the same energy each and every time, drawn by the heart but forced to remain apart.”

The book takes place mainly in modern day times, but it also highlights scenes in the Salem Witch Trials period. There was something very unique and special with the way that Thawer chose to do this. It enhanced the story by bringing a deeper understanding of the relationship between the characters, but also of their current desires. I felt that the plot was original and twisty with things I didn’t really predict happening. The paranormal element was sheer perfection and left this reader wanting more and more.

“Trin opened herself in that moment, heart and soul, and knew in an instant what they needed to do.”

Overall, The Witches of BlackBrook was a grand slam for me. I was so enchanted by this spellbinding tale of hope, love, and a bond that can’t be broken. There was something special about it and I honestly think it had something for all different types of readers. Whether you’re into romance, historical, paranormal, new adult, etc. the author effortlessly weaves so many elements together to create a flawless experience for whoever picks it up. If you’re looking to be enchanted and escape your mind for a couple hours, I highly suggest picking up The Witches of BlackBrook and diving on in!

and bad intentions hanging around in the air

The Witches of BlackBrook is a book about three sisters escaping a time of the witch trials and being transported to the future, in a way. In each life they live, they are meant to find each other, to be together again. However, for some reason, Trin (the eldest sister who cast the spell that allowed them to escape) can only find one sister in each life. She becomes slightly obsessed with finding her last sister, and so when she meets the Hardy's and sparks erupt, she gets her hopes up. But that's just the beginning. There's still a lot of secrets, deceit, evil, and bad intentions hanging around in the air. And with all these weird occurrences happening, who knows what's really happening? Unless of course, someone isn't who they say they are...

I like this book. It's all about reuniting as a family and fighting off the evil trying to keep said family separated. It had mystery, romance, paranormal occurrences (obviously). It was a fight to find out what was happening and why and how to stop it once the sister's figured it out. It was enjoyable to read.

The characters were good. I like Trin and how she's fiercely protective. I love how she cares so much for her family that she'll do everything in her power to be with them again. It's only natural that she'd get a little obsessed and desperate enough to think every witch she encounters could be her long lost sister. But that's what makes her easier to connect with, because we all get lost in our desires at times. I like how she never gave up even though people around her died, while other lie to her and use her. She's strong and a likable character.

Kit is a jealous little thing. I couldn't understand why she was always so jealous. I mean, I had my ideas, my predictions, but it didn't really make sense. Especially the parts we read in her POV. Those don't make sense anymore, especially not after the ending. It's almost like she's two different people. I don't know. It doesn't really work for me. At least she was nice and cares about Trin, though. For that, she is still a character I like. It made the story more enjoyable.

While I like this book however, at times the dialogue didn't feel natural. It felt rather... choppy. As well as the fact that things at times were rushed. The ending was the most rushed, because at first. the sister's have no clue what their next move will be and then BAM! Trin has sex and she knows all the answers? She knows exactly how the night will play out and what she needs to do? I don't know. It just doesn't work for me. I get that they're witches, but it happened all so suddenly and then it was over. The book itself is fairly fast paced, yes, but even so, some things just went by a little too fast with little or no explanation.

Overall, I like this book. I do. But it was a bit rushed, some things didn't fall into place at the end, and it didn't always flow well. I still recommend this to lovers of paranormal, witchy reads though!

Superior history of Chinese food in America

The story of Chinese food in America has been told several times now, by Andrew Coe, Erica Peters, and others, but Haiming Liu finds plenty of good new material. He tells the fairly familiar story of the coming of Chinese food, rise of chop suey, and so on, but manages to find a lot of previously unused documentation. He then goes on to chronicle some recent developments: the rise to glory of the San Gabriel Valley in California (where I now eat almost every week), the rise of the Dintaifung dumpling chain in Taiwan (and they are GOOD), the development of P. All in all a wonderful read--well written, authoritative. One minor correction I have to make--he explains "chop suey" as "animal intestines." It actually means "miscellaneous leftovers," which does indeed include animal intestines, but the original chop suey was made from the "miscellaneous leftovers" of vegetables left unsold after a day of sale by vegetable farmers in Guangdong Province (I knew some of them...).

Well writen book, lots of history.

I found the book to be well written, well researched, and full of interesting historical detail. I came to the book looking for a specific item and found it so interesting that I read the entire book. There is much of Chinese history in the United States incorporated into the telling of the story. I learned a lot reading this book. As a matter of curiosity, I looked up some of his 19th century references online and found that he had summarized them well. The only complaint was that the book could be indexed better.

Funniest of the Quick Reads Short Stories

Men at Work is definitely the most entertaining of all the books in the Quick Reads Series. The story I think works so well because the main character Ian Greening, is such a likeable character, as his girlfriend who he clearly cares a lot about. So you do feel for the guy when his unemployed girlfriend gets a job in his workplace, and even though this means the end of independent Ian, he loves her so much he doesn't speak up. But his girlfriend ultimately goes to far in changing Ian's work life and image seen by his colleagues. Ian has to get rid of her, but how?

There's not a lot of humorous reads amongst the Quick Reads short stories series. Trouble on the Heath by Terry Jones is another good one to check out if you're after a fun read. If you're unfamiliar with the Quick Reads series, they are books published to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced (these all sell of the rack for under two pounds in the UK) short story length fiction and non fiction. I think Men at Work achieves those goals and those reading this as their first book ever or for a while will definitely be encouraged to try other Quick Reads stories or regular novels.

This is the first story I've come across by Mike Gayle, after reading this great book I'll definitely be checking out his novels.

Great novel and a must have in your collection of all his work! Mike Gayle just know how to entertain you and make you identify with the characters at one or another point in your life. He is to fiction what Celine Dion is to music!
