I enjoyed this book. Given the rather violent nature of the plot theme itself this is a remarkably sweet book. The relationship between the H and h is very nice, the stuff of classical romance novels. The sexy scenes between the H and h were a bit boring and repetitive but I did enjoy watching their relationship grow in other ways. I tend to read a lot of gritty even violent books so I thought it was kind of funny that both Sylvie and Aedan think he was such a bad boy for what happened in his past. I was a little let down by the big reveal of his past because it really was not that bad. There were also some clearly unrealistic events that occurred at the end of the book but I was ok with that since I am not a complete stickler for realism. I do not mind suspending belief in favor of a good HEA. All in all a good little read.

I had to see what the buzz was about!

I received 5 emails about this book - that it was the book of the year. That Aedan was topping the BBF list over Remy, Seth, Christian, Jesse, Kellan, Travis and all other BBF's. When I checked Amazon - it had a 4.9 rating. So i did the one-click. There is not a long build up until BAM - and I was hooked. I became immediately emotionally invested in this book.

Sylvie "volunteers" to fight at an underground fight club to save her brother's life. The Fight Promoter, Rick is not a guy to cross. She turns to ex-fighter Aedan for training. He finally agrees and this is when the sexual tension that began on the second page of the book moves up to sweltering. So Hot!!

Aedan has demons that keep him from acting on his ummm..... Attraction for Sylvie. From that part on, since things werent bad enough, they got worse. However, as things beyond their control continued to grow darker and darker... Aedan finally gives in.

When I say this book is hot, i mean a panty changer! I've read books with more Alpha, more erotic, kinkier or more decsriptive but the build up to the tension added to Aedan and all things sex, he amps up to a dirty talking uber-alpha. He does tell her at one point that he was only good at 2 things.... Fighting and fu$&ing.

Im not going to go on and on.... I hate spoilers - READ THE BOOK! It is one of my favorites of this year. I do want to say that while this book is not dark, but an incident at the very beginning could be a trigger for some.

It’s morbid, it’s bloody, it’s awesome. Punching and Kissing lived up to its name, and I can’t help but to love and savor every single page.

Because this girl? Ahh, she’s a brave girl. That or she’s pretty much crazy to get herself in that kind of situation. She may or may not have a choice, but one thing is for sure – she has to go through with it because she couldn’t bear the consequences. There is only one man who can help her…

Aeden – he was danger personified. He was done with his past, and he told himself he wasn’t coming back into it. Until she came into his life and begged for his help. He was the only one who can help her. There was no way she’d survive the situation and get out alive. He wasn’t sure at first, but how can he possibly resist this girl who had caught his attention the first time he ever laid his eyes on her? It took some time, but he agreed to helping her.

His control was tested whenever they’re together. He was trying his best to stop the attraction and the urge to be with her. But every time they’re together, she consumes him. His past always gets in the way, it was the only thing that was stopping him from wanting her.

And it didn’t take that long before they finally gave in. It was a total explosion – the feelings and attraction that they are trying to caged in is finally out, and there was no way of stopping it. Definitely sexy, steamy and can set your readers on fire!

Nevertheless, there is still that pressing situation that needs to be addressed; Aedan’s past and Sylvie’s present. Can they survive? Will their love be truly enough?

There were so many heart-stopping moments in the book, interesting and jaw-dropping twist. You can’t help but want to know how is everything is going to play out, and if this two would have their happy ending. The powerful story line Helena Newbury had with Punching and Kissing is enough to get you hooked.

Doesn't need another 5-star review, but here's one anyway...

A handful of entertainment works (books, movies, music, TV shows) have connected with me in ways that I can barely describe. They move me emotionally, they provoke my imagination, and they make me want to experience them over and over again. They describe people and situations to which I can completely relate. Bruce Springsteen's music does that for me. Star Wars used to do that until the prequels came about. The TV show St. Elsewhere used to do it (haven't seen it in years, but I assume it holds up). And Lonesome Dove continues to do so. There are so many positive reviews here that it's hard not to be redunant. I agree with it all: believable characters that you feel like you know, not long enough even at 900 pages, brutal but realistic violence. This is simply the best book I have ever read, and the emotional impact still rings true after nearly 16 years. I haven't reread it in several years, but I'm certain that I remember nearly every scene and much of the dialogue.
Several warnings:
1) Nothing you read afterwards, for years to come, will compare. Lonesome Dove will spoil you and diminish everything else you read, no matter how good it may be.
2) It really is not long enough even at it's sizable bulk. You will not want this to end. It starts slowly, but like the cattle drive it depicts, it builds momentum.
3) You will have a difficult time convincing anyone else to read this fine book. You'll hear several standard excuses, especially "I don't like Westerns" and "It's too long" (refer people who say this to my #2 warning above). I know few people who have ever read the book, but those of us who have share the same feelings. It's frustrating to read something so wonderful yet have so few people with whom to share it.
4) McMurtry's sequel and prequels are inferior. You will want more after reading this book, but his other works in the series do not live up to the standards set here. They are good works by themselves, but are inconsistent with the facts and spirit established in the original book. I've heard him speak at several book signings, and for reasons unknown he seems to hold Lonesome Dove in contempt. It has always struck me that he must have intentionally sabotaged the other books as a way of "sticking it" to the fans who inundate him with their love for this book. Don't let that diminish your enjoyment of Lonesome Dove.
5) It is emotionally devastating. This is a sad, brutal, tragic book (bet that really sells you on it, doesn't it? well, sad and brutal have never been done so well). You will experience the characters' joys, but you will also share their considerable pain. Do not let anyone tell you how this book ends. I was not expecting the outcome, but it flowed naturally with the story. Given its realism and insight into life and human nature, the book ended in the only way it could if it were to remain true to itself. Life doesn't end happily, and neither does Lonesome Dove. These characters, their stories and their fates, will haunt you until the end of your days.
When you're finished with the book, watch the movie- looking forward to seeing it should be some consolation after the letdown of finishing the book. Don't fall into the mentality that "the movie is never as good as the book". In this case it is, and they offer a wonderful complement to one another.

One word: magnificent

I have never been a fan of the literary western genre and confess that I read this book solely because I watched the movie based upon this book. Incredibly, the book supercedes the movie and McMurtry's characterization of Woodrow and Gus are truly stunning. It's the characters that turn this book into a compelling classic, rarely does the reader encounter such deftly-drawn and intriguing men as McCall and McCrae. You feel as if you are in Lonesome Dove with these men, and with them every step of the way from Texas to Montana. It's a magnificent journey and McMurtry is a superlative writer.
Even if you've never read a western book in your life, this is a literary masterpiece, the Shakespeare of the range, so to speak.

Tolstoy on the Range

Stay with me here. I'm serious. I think Lonesome Dove can standcomparison to Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. Of course, I've only read Tolstoy in translation, so chances are I've missed alot, but there is no question that McMurtry creates something here very close to that impossible dream: The Great American Novel. I dont know that any other American writer has ever suceeded on this scale, which is why I go to Tolstoy.
McMurtry uses the Western as a starting point, but there is a little of everything here. Surely there has never been another American Western with so many varied characters, both men and and women. McMurtry juggles many different points of view, but manages to give each of his characters a unique voice. Most remarkable of all, I think, are the women in the book, who manage to escape the usual stereotypes of madonna or whore, even though many of them are, quite literally, prostitutes.
Lonesome Dove is written in a deceptively simple, unpretentious style. I've just finished reading it for the second time. Despite its length it is really a fast read, since it is one of those books that demands to be taken with you where ever you go until you are done.

This Second Edition of the first book-length study of Smith--a substantial examination of his life and works, his artistic evolution and literary heritage--includes a supplementary suite of essays that delve into the most interesting aspects of Smith's fiction, plus Smith's own tale of Mars, "Mnemoka," unpublished in his lifetime, but resurrected here from the fragments of its burned manuscript. Wonderful critical introduction to Clark Ashton Smith

This is a welcome, expanded edition of Behrends' work for Starmont, to which the Behrends added further examples of his scholarship. Smith's life, verse, prose poetry, the story cycles and individual prose fictions are treated in a number of chapters that are brief in duration, but packed with Behrends' insights into this man's work.

The reprinted essay, "The Song of the Necromancer: 'Loss' in Clark Ashton Smith's Fiction" is particularly important in focusing attention away from the common misconceptions that Smith's work delights above all else in depictions of torture, depravity, and decay, a view reinforced by L. Sprague De Camp's facile and oft-quoted remark that "Nobody since Poe has so loved a well-rotted corpse". Smith may well be the Master of Magnificent Dooms, but the lingering impression most strongly felt after the majority of his poems, prose poems, and stories is the melancholy consideration of all that these characters, the world, and even we ourselves have lost.

My only complaint about this book lies with Wildside's decision to reprint Behrends' Primary and Secondary Bibliographies exactly as they appeared in the 1990 edition, thus ignoring scholarship devoted to Smith from the last 25 years. This does not detract from the value of Behrends' work, which remains clearly written, well-argued, deeply felt.

Nonetheless, these bibliographies, as they stand, are no longer as useful to the reader of Smith as they were when first compiled, and are a disservice to the many men and women who have devoted their time and energy to Smith studies since Behrends published this study, especially when those studies have resulted in such seminal volumes as the SELECTED LETTERS (Arkham House, 2003), the collected fiction published by Night Shade Press (5 volumes between 2007-2010, and a miscellany in 2011), as well as several volumes from Hippocampus Press, including the collected correspondence of Smith with George Sterling (2005), the three-volume collected poems and translations (2007-2008), and the volume of essays and appreciations on Smith edited by Scott Connors (2006). Beyond this is a variety of worthy material ranging from newly uncovered stories, prose poems, and verse by Smith, variant texts of familiar work by Smith, essays in print and electronic media, journals, and collections.

Clark Ashton Smith has long been my favorite of the Weird Tales triumvirate

Clark Ashton Smith has long been my favorite of the Weird Tales triumvirate. So it’s refreshing to see him finally emerge from out of Lovecraft and Howard’s shadow with so much of his work being reissued and thoughtfully discussed. There’s a lot to like in Behrends’ book. His Critical Study hits everything it should: Smith’s life, his poetry, the different story cycles, his stand-alone works, and his reoccurring themes. It’s a very thoughtful and well-researched nonfiction work. Without a doubt, Behrends knows his Smith

However, I had some issues with it. First, the Amazon synopsis describes it as “a substantial examination of his life and work”. However, the opening chapter on Smith’s life is a mere 25 pages of a 220 page book, less actually if you only look at the biographical facts contained in those 25 pages. The supplementary essays would have been better served worked into the book itself rather than tacked on to the end where they seem more an afterthought to raise page count. Furthermore, the “virgin” essay was pointless and unnecessary without a greater discussion of Smith’s love life for appropriate context. And this book certainly was not the place to include a story of Smith’s that Behrends completed.

But the worst offense, I think, is for a second edition of a nonfiction book released by an actual publisher to contain a single typo. And this book has several, which absolutely undercut any claim of critical authority for me.

Not much help for the experienced home buyer

I picked up this book to learn more about investing in real estate, but unfortunately I did not get much out of it. If you have ever bought a home before, then you know all this information already. If you have never owned a home before, then this book would likely be helpful. However, I did not find it useful in regards to learning how to invest in a second home. It is well-organized and well-written.

About the Author

Peggy Parish was born and grew up in Manning, South Carolina. Before moving to New York City, she taught school in the Panhandle country and in coal-mining areas. Her first job in New York City was with the Girl Scouts, and she now teaches the third grade at the Dalton School in Manhattan. Miss Parish is the author of several other books for children, including the popular Let's Be Indians.

Classic is still good

I ordered this for a friends kid because they are from Australia. It was fun to give such a classic book to a family who knew nothing about Amelias antics. I loved her and hope with this gift that their children will love it as much as my son did.

If you are like me who have the passion for serious running, enjoy reading and analytical thinking while having a full-time job + other professional activities, this book is a must-have. I got one for me and two as presents to my friends. Using this book as the major reference to coach and heal myself, I qualified for the Boston Marathon at my marathon debut after about one year's training, took 10 minutes off in another year and I am on my way to beat NYC marathon qualification time for guaranteed number. Running programs are everywhere. "Individualizing" has become a cliché. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms and principles behind body and training is essential to derive a healthy and effective training program that adapts to the body's response. Lore of Running distinguishes itself from other running books by offering a large volume of solid evidence to support the principles concluded by the author. The readers have the freedom of utilizing these materials, often presented in interesting ways such as stories about famous runners, to make their own conclusions. I feel like having a very pleasant academic discussion with the author who is convincing, but not dictating while reading the book. The background of the author - ultra-marathon athlete, researcher and practicing sports MD is perfect for writing such comprehensive running book.
This book is certainly not a quick recipe. It takes time to digest the material. If you enjoy reading, it is a plus. I have read some section multiple times. Another very good running book that takes much less time to read is Daniels' Running Formula by Jack Daniels that is geared more toward elite runners, but still very helpful for midpack runners like me.

The Big Book of Running

In depth is an understatement. This book is HUGE. From training techniques to biology, it covers everything about running. Due to its size and nature this is probably better used for reference than straight reading.
